Beabadoobee is of course your stage name… where did it come from?
“My stage name Beabadoobee came from my ‘Finsta’ account because didn’t think I was ever going to do music. I thought it was like a fun thing. I’ve always wanted to be a nursery teacher, so, I just told my friend Oscar who releases my music for me, no one’s going to listen to my music so just call it Beabadoobee. I thought it was funny because it sounded like a Minion on acid.”
We’re obsessed with your song Cologne, what’s your favourite song you have written so far?
“Coffee because it’s my first ever song I wrote and Yoshima, Forrest, Magdeline because it’s about my future kid’s names”
Are any of your lyrics special to you?
“Cologne – Think I’m going to explode. Baby, I’ve been home alone. Won’t you just drop your shift. And pick up the phone?”
In terms of music, do you have any idols? Who inspires you?
“I feel like, to make good art, you kinda have to, not steal, but reference a lot of things, like it’s an inevitability of the industry and what you create. I take a lot of inspiration from bands like The Cardigans and like Seeing Mardiston, Sonic Youth, 6 Underground. There’s a lot.”
When it comes to your eclectic style, who are your style muses?
“It’s definitely good to have style influences, looking at Devon Aoki and what she wore, Kim Gordon or The Breeders and what they wore on stage. But honestly, I dress for comfort, whatever I feel most comfortable in. Especially when I’m playing on stage, I can’t be wearing a low-cut top if I think I’m gonna flash everyone in the audience. I wanna be comfortable and confident.”
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
“The best advice I’ve been given is probably what my dad tells me every morning, ‘Just remember the people around you’ and ‘learn to appreciate things, keep both feet on the ground’. I feel like life moves really fast but as long as you’ve got a solid group of friends and a solid foundation, you’re good.”
That is some killer advice, props to dad. Before we let you go, what’s been your favourite item from the shoot today?
“Oh my god, I LOVE those ski headbands, those headbands are so cute. Also, the green shoes are so cute. The Jeans over the tartan trousers. So cute. I want them all.”
