Get to know the Gotherington Jaguars

Introducing: the Gotherington Jaguars FC. Supercharged, with Superdry by their side, and all set to give it their best shot, this top-ranking under-12s team shows no sign of slowing.

Formed just 3 years ago, with a mere 10 players, the team’s now home to more than 150 girls and 15 coaches. And that’s not all – they’ve just taken home the top prize in the Gloucester County Girls League.

A Shaky Start

Their early games resulted in real hammerings. The worst at the hand of Cheltenham Town FC, who beat the team 14-0. After the match, they heard one parent say: ‘I thought you would have been better with a sponsor like Superdry’ – ouch.

But the Jaguars soon had their revenge.

Last year, the Gloucestershire FA held their first under-11s football competition – and the Jaguars won.

A bright future

But the team’s success doesn’t stop there.

8 of the club’s players have been selected for the Gloucestershire Emerging Talent Centre (ETC), where they’ll be trained by professional coaches for an entire season. It’s funded by the Premier League and operated by the Forest Green Rovers FC, who’ve just signed 4 of the club’s under-12s players.

It’s no surprise that football’s one of the fastest growing female sports in the world, but it’s not just about the action on the pitch. It’s about celebrating how far women’s sport has come and giving young girls the opportunity to continue making history.

“We want girl’s football to saturate Gloucestershire and we’re actively working to help other clubs set up their own girls’ teams. We want more competitors and to grow this part of the sport,” adds Wayne.

“Winning is great but our primary goal is for the kids to have fun, make new friends, and learn skills they’ll use for life.”

The big-wins and the near-misses. The highs and the lows. We’re celebrating it all.
